Hair Loss

Hair loss that occurs suddenly and dramatically can usually be traced back to a stressor that occured 6-8 weeks prior to beginning of hair loss.

This type of hair loss is called Telogen Effluvium (note - this is different than autoimmune hair loss, hereditary hair loss, and male/female pattern hair loss).

Telogen effluvium can be a very stressful experience!

It's important to realize that the stressor causing telogen effluvium can be physical (i.e. fever, surgery, car accident or other injury) or mental/emotional (divorce, loss of a loved one, a move, a new job, etc).

In recent times, COVID-19 infections have caused many to experience telogen effluvium.

To make matters more complex, other underlying issues such as iron deficiency, poor nutrition, changes in thyroid or sex hormone levels, coupled with the chronic stress of living in a pandemic world (lockdowns, inflation, isolation, job changes) can exacerbate hair loss.

Here is what you shold know about Telogen Effluvium:

1. The intense hair loss occurs 6-8 weeks after a stressor occurs
2. The hair loss usually lasts for 6-8 weeks, then slows to a stop
3. Less than 50% of the hair is lost
4. Complete balding will not occur
5. Noticeable regrowth happens in 6-12 months
6. If hair loss is longer than 4-6 months, this usually means other causes have not been identified/treated

Here are some other common causes of continued hair loss:

  • Iron deficency

  • Thyroid problems

  • Poor nutrient intake or absoprtion

  • Lack of adequate protein

  • Too much testosterone in females or too little in males (this is often caused by insulin resistance)

  • Too little estrogen

  • Lack of vitamin D, fatty acids, zinc, biotin, vitamin B6, vitmain B12, folate, and/or minerals

Other hair growth support factors:

  • Green tea

  • Eclipta alba, aka "false daisy"

  • Shilajit

  • Topical onion oil

  • Topical peppermint oil

  • Topical rosemary oil

  • Cold water therapy to the scalp

Here is the important part:

Work with your doctor so they can help you discover the cause(s) of your hair loss. Once you identify the cause(s), you can then use the correct therapies. Hint - if you are only offered Rogaine, it's time to seek out holistic heathcare! There are many many options that are effective and treat at the root cause (pun intended).

I hope this article has relieved some of the stress of stress-related hair loss.
